Hry guys :),
So this is kinda just a reply to your guys letter. My new companion is Elder Christensen is is from virgina and is a really funny guy. I am enjoying working w/ him. It nice to have both of us motivating each other instead of one having to always motivate the other. The area is really great. We are close to the sea so thats new but I cant hear it at night. Its about a 30 minute walk from our flat. But we have a big uni in our area that has about 22 thousand students. Its really cool. So we have a big YSA group that has family home evening every monday. I cant wait to go back canyoneering. I understand the whole trials things. We see a lot of that everyday. I had to stop reading Jesus the christ when I first came on my mission because I thought it would have been more important to study Preach my gospel. I ‘m now study it again and I love how we know so much about the life of christ. One thing that I now appreciate is the knwledge that I have in the churh. I can sit down and have a talk with a priest or someone that has been studing the new testiment their whole life and because of the books our church has and the understanding that brings I can contribute and participate in the conversation. I find it amazing. Its is starting to get cold here and I find it funny because I’ll still wear short sleeve shirts and elder Christensen thinks Im crazy. The culture is so different out here. It makes me realize how dedicated people are to there calling in the US. Do you still ahve your Preach my Gospel?? YOu should read the helping people keep commitments part. There is some really good quotes in there. Me and Elder C Studied early last week in preach my gospel about sharing testimonies. We read a qoute by Brigham Young About bearing simple tesimony. We htan watfched a movie clip on it. it is one of my favorites. Its called a man without eloquence. You guys should look it up!! :). Mark wants to get baptised buy the end of the year but there is some things in the way. His wife is a member and they have 2 kids. I’ve actually lost weight. Dont ask me how that happened????
Love you too! Cheers? haha
This past week has been really good! Me and ELder Christensen get
along really well. He is from Virgina and it is nice to get ou;t of
whatever funk Ive been in. This week was stake conference and Our
mission president came done for it and him and his wife gave a talk.
They we’re both very good. The stake president here is really young.
probably mid to early thirty’s. He gave a very good talk as well kinda
just about being members of the true church of Jesus Christ and how we
can’t take that Litghly.
We did some really good contacting near a university here and I
enjoy being around so many people our age. I think what I learned most
this past week is that I can listen and study and do whatever but if I
dont apply what Im learning it doesn treally matter that much.
We are hoping for a baptism in a week or two so I’ll let you guys
know how that goes. I think the members are trying to make me fat
here. One member found out I like carrot cake and than I got two this
past week. It is amazing working near the ocean though. It isn’t a
island but there is a canal and when it feels up it technically is a
island but really it is just a penisula. We can see the Island of
white from our side of the sea and last week I got to ride in a hover
craft to get over there.
So sense we are a lot farther from the mission office here than when I
was in london it takes longer for me to get letters and packages
because we only recieve mail from them maybe once a month at best. Im
also going to guess that I’ll be here a while so Im just going to give
you guys my flat address. It is
70 oriel rd
So yeah that will come straight to me!! and I wont have to wait months
and months for it. 🙂 Thats all so cheers!
Portsmouth. It is right next to the beach. I missionary here was sick
so he went home. My new companion is Elder Christensen. He is really
cool. He is from Virgina. He has been out 6 week longer than I have
been. It was a crazy move. We had interview w/ president Millar on
Tuesday. During the interview he asked if I liked my area and how I
thought the work was going. He also asked if I thought I was ready for
a change. I thought he was talking about the end of the transfer. But
than he said that There was a missionary who was sick and needed to go
home and that I would be going down to Portsmouth. That night I got a
call at half past 9 saying that I needed to pack and that I would be
moving the next morning at half past 8. But Im already loving this
ward. Its is amazing. It is a really strong ward. The YSA in the ward
are also really strong and just so motivated. We had dinner with
members every day this week which is sooo nice. But The area is right
on the beach. So yesterday for P-day we went to the isle of wight.
Which was really cool. It is interesting being in a completely new
area in just a few days. To get to the Island we took a hover craft
which was really interesting.
Yeah but conference was so different. It is really interesting to
watch the prophet and apostles talk and realize that when they say we
pray for the missionaries that means you. Especially Elder Nelson’s on
“Ask the missionaries, They can help you”. That talk was kinda
intimidating sitting on this side. It was still really cool. I love
hearing them talk and how like elder Christensen’s it is meant almost
for the whole world not just for Members of the church. I kinda liked
how there was a couple of talks that were meant for the nonmember
audience. Just ask the missionaries they can help you!! man that was
really funny. Me and elder Christensen are getting along really well
already! He kinda reminds of seku. And me and him are already getting
to that level that me and seku we’re at. I guess that is what happens
when you live w/ some one that you dont know at all. But yeah he is
also really motivated which is a nice change. So Im really looking
forward to working w/ him. But man This area is so brilliant. There is
a military base near by so we have a few Americans in the ward. So far
the Forgren’s are amazing. They are from Virginia also but when we go
over there it is like im back in the US. They get American food from
the military base. They are a really cool family though. We have a
couple of investigators here but I havn’t met them all yet.
It weird to think that I havn’t even been here a week yet. We have
a university in our area as well so their is a lot of UNI students. Im
also finally!!! hearing British accents!!! yeah!!! Yeah I did hear it
in London but it was more of a London accents. Here it is more like
the accent you hear on the telie. We’ll that is most of my week. Lets
recap, Moved, General Conference, Americans!! yeah that about it. Love
you guys and talk to you next week.
Love Elder Oviatt
This week has been alright. Im fine parents. Im just telling you how I
feel and how I’m doing. If it was as bad as you guys are thinking it
is I would be getting help but I’m just letting you guys know of the
tiny things that are going on w/ me. I can stop telling you the LITTLE
problems Im going through if you guys are going to get worked up about
it. I love you and am grateful for your consern but For the most part
IM great!!! Im lovin my mission and the people. Im still struggling
being in a tri. Not alot but it is just different. Im growing to love
Elder Simplicio. Elder Moulin was sick last monday for P-day and I
think he got me sick as well. I have been sick since thursday. The
cold weather isn’t helping much ether. Thank goodness I bought all
that dayquil before I came here. Im getting better finally. I think.
It was funny because elder T said I had a tempurture so we found a
themometer and I had to convert it from farenhieght to celcius for
both of them.
I did get kinda frustrated this week. So since elder T is my second
companion he is technically is my follow up trainer. So Our old
district Leader said that for me to lead the area for a few weeks till
he got use to the new area and then he should take over. The problem I
have is that Im still the one having to lead everthing. If I dont wake
up he doesn’t get up. If I don’t say hey lets go he stays in the flat.
I was waiting for him to take over but now we are in our second
transfer and im still leading. Which is fine. I accepted that maybe
thats just who he is and that at least I’m getting practiced at being
the senior companion even if I wasn’t one. But now that we are in a
tri I thought okay. Maybe things would change Espesially since he is
the district leader. But nope. It is the same w/ him. But not as bad.
I’m still the one that says where we are going and when and even being
the one the gets the map and leads us there. Im just confused. I’m a
lot younger in the mission than both of them and yet I’m the one
acting like the senior companion.
I love both of them but yeah. It would be different if I actually
was the senior companion but I’m not. I love both of them and again
this is just a little concern that I have that I thought you guys
would be interested in. Don’t look to much into it. Im still the happy
always smilling Devin I always was. 🙂 Michael and isabel are both
really good. WE pickup up 2 new investigateors this week but I’ll
probably wait till next week to tell you guys about them. Hope you all
have a great week and thanks for all the support you guys give me. 🙂
Love as always Elder Oviatt
